I’ve been looking for a fun social game to play with my friends during meet-ups and parties for some time now and I think I’ve found it in a little-known app that can be found on the App Store (iOS) and Android’s Play Store called Gimme That Thing - Party Game.
It is a fantastic little multiplayer party game for groups of friends and family; adults and kids alike. We downloaded it on a tablet, but it can be played on any smartphone. And it had us in hysterics from start to finish. It’s crafted very well and engineered to maximise laughter!
The premise is simple: gather your mates together and nominate anything at hand to be 'The Thing' - it doesn’t matter what it is - it could be a coin, a beermat - whatever. Now whoever starts the game with The Thing has to defend it to the end as cards are flipped to reveal hilarious challenges to take it from you. Whoever is in possession of The Thing when the last card is drawn is the winner.
A few examples I can recall include:
‘Draw a drunken strawberry to take The Thing.’ (Party Pack)
‘Players can now only communicate in the accent associated with their last holiday until their next turn.’ (Holiday Pack)
‘Get approval from your fellow players that your three ‘high kicks’ are indeed high, to take The Thing.’ (Dance Pack)
‘Impersonate a sports star. The first to identify them can take The Thing.’ (Sports Pack)
So, you can see, after a few drinks, this only gets funnier!
So, when you download the game, it comes with the base pack, but you can purchase additional themed packs and the makers plan to release more in the future (I hear a manga and anime pack for the enthusiasts is just around the corner). The Party Pack is perfect for a boozy night with pals, but you can also download a movie-themed pack as well as music, dance, sports and more.
A nice little touch is that there are no ads in the game, even though the app is free. As I said, you get the free pack with the app, but rather than relying on ad revenue - the makers hope that people will love the game so much, they’ll want to explore the additional packs. Personally I would strongly recommend buying the Party Pack. It’s a drinking game on Android, but the iOS version isn’t as Apple don’t like to encourage such debauchery…! But you can easily incorporate your own drinking element (every time you lose The Thing - take a drink, for example).
You can customise the prize (winner takes a note from each players’ wallet was one we came up with) as well as customise the length of the game. The music is ace, the graphics and interface clean and smooth and there are little sub games that expand the experience even more - you’ll flip a card and every now and then be taken to a spinner and a deeper level of play full of subgames.
So, next time you’re at the pub and the conversation dries up or you want something different to play with the kids on games night, whip this out on your mobile phone or tablet and let the laughter commence!
