Decorating your home can be expensive, especially if you are moving into a new home for the first time and starting with minimal furniture or looking to overhaul your style completely. Creating your home style needn't be heavy on the purse strings, however. With a bit of imagination and creativity, you can create enjoyable and interesting decor ideas with a little.

Before embarking on any home interior renovations, the first step is to decide exactly what style you are actually looking for. Create a Pinterest board to help you decide on the look or even features you want in your home. Once you have settled on your style and look, you can start looking at different projects you can take on.

This post takes a look at some fun home hacks to add character to your home.

Update Your Walls

There are some really stunning wallpaper designs on the market right now. However, if you are looking for a unique style, why not try your hand at creating a unique pattern that you are unlikely to find elsewhere. Some genius ideas have seen parents use glittered and shimmery paper samples to create a mermaid tail design on a wall by carefully placing shaped cutouts in a pattern until the wall is covered.

Try your hand using tape on walls to create geometric designs by painting the spaces inside the lines. Then just before the paint is dry, remove the tape. Alternatively, use coloured crafting tape or stencils to create a design that blends in with your style for less. Use black tape on white walls to create contrast and complete a fully monochrome look.

Murals are also great if you have a talent for drawing. Use your wall as a canvas and create your own feature wall that really gives your visitors a talking point.

Update your Cabinetry

Replacing cabinets and units can be costly. As can replacing wardrobes and doors etc. If you are renting, it may be that you are unable to remove anything that came with your home fully. In this case, it is best to ask permission before attempting to update or work any cabinets in your home.

Use vinyl covering to give your cupboards, drawers, wardrobes etc., a new lease of life. Change the colour scheme by applying the vinyl to smooth, cleaned surfaces making sure they are free from dust. Mould the covering to curved styles and corners by applying a gentle heat source directly to the curve or corner to allow you to get a smoother, more seamless look.

Another popular idea is to repaint wooden surfaces with Frenchic paint for a more permanent look. Pay attention to the tools you are using and prepare for painting cupboard doors and cabinets to give you a high-quality professional finish.

Recover Furniture

Replacing your sofa can be expensive. But nothing is stopping you from giving your current one a facelift. Or maybe you need to breathe new life into a second-hand purchase that needs refreshing. Either way, all you need is some fabric, the use of gas powered glue guns or a heavy-duty stapler, and you are ready to go.

For replacing chair seats, it is relatively easy to recover, and the job is done. Wrap the new fabric around the seat base, fix it in place using your glue gun or stapler, and you can reattach it back to the chair.

For redressing sofas or other upholstery, you may find it easier to follow a step by step to recover your sofa to make sure you are using the right material and cutting it correctly to ensure a good level of coverage that won't tear or pull and fits neatly around joins.

Add Plants

Plants can really transform the look and feel of a room. Having various plants at home can instantly create focal points and allow you to add life and character to a room. Choose from adding small potted plants to window ledges. Succulents are popular this season and need very little care and attention. They also look great on shelves, placed going up staircases, and in bathrooms.

If you are short on space, then why not look at hanging plants in crocheted holders from the ceilings or even any exposed beams you may have.

Adding character to your home can help you feel like you are really settled in. Looking at creative ways you can upcycle what you already have can help you really change your home for all to less than buying brand new.
