Note: this post was written by my boyfriend who tried on a fantastic suit from Hawes & Curtis, a lovely shop that sells men and women's formal clothing. I'm a huge fan of the lovely UK shirt and clothing retailer Hawes & Curtis because they're known for specialising in shirts for men and women, and are pretty great for workwear. I hope you can check out some of their silk shirts, professional work shirts or formal trousers.
Suit Review
As a lawyer, I’ve had to wear suits for many different roles - as a presenter, client, groomsman, interviewer, interviewee, you name it. I’ve also worn them across different cultures - from Asia to Europe to Australia. These experiences have taught me three critical things about finding the perfect suit.
Fit
The single most important aspect of picking the right suit. If it doesn’t fit right, material and style don’t matter. The primary purpose of the suit is to accentuate features such as the shoulders and chest, while diverting attention away from the infamous (beer) belly. This is the reason that most people will recommend that you get your suit tailored. However, tailoring can be an unnecessarily expensive and surprisingly inaccurate process. That’s where Hawes and Curtis’ 1913 collection comes in - it’s the most well fitting and comfortable suit I’ve worn. This includes my previous tailored suit which I payed a 40% premium for. The HC jacket sits just right on my shoulders and the pants snap to my waist without needing a belt. I have a typical male body, slightly broad shoulders and chest and slightly narrow waist (Uniqlo fits like a glove). Ofcourse, your measurements might be different - that’s where HC’s precise fitting guide comes in handy - you’re able to find the precise fit based on your exact measurements, rather than a standard three sizes fit all model.Material
Material is important because you don’t want loose strands of low quality cotton chafing your inner thighs as you sit through a meeting on a hot day. It also ensures the longevity of your item and last you through many a full moon. HC’s pure merino wool material is great for all temperatures - did you know that merino wool wicks sweat as well as insulates?? It feels cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I’m almost tempted to wear them as pyjamas, but my girlfriend vetoed that idea. Most importantly, it’s a bargain for the price. My previous suit was made from a low quality cotton material which began to fray and shrivel after about a year of use. Merino wool will last you a decade.Style
The big selling point here is value. Walk into any tailor, and they will tell you that their advertised price is for the hideous suit in the corner, and any additional styling will cost you an exorbitant premium. My previous suit was a horrid shade of blue which I thought was cool at the time but regretted pretty quickly. The tailor failed to advise me otherwise. Not the case for HC. Their styles are vetted by the top designers in Europe, so you know that what you’re wearing is timeless in design. This applies to the entire 1913 collection, where you’ll be very impressive with the intricate details interwoven into the fabric of each item. There’s a reason there are less than 10 suits in all, because suits are meant to be timeless, not trendy - sometimes, less is more. Avoid making the mistake I did, impulsively picking the ‘coolest’ out of a booklet of 50 shades of blue. The brand is doing a Black Friday sale now, so head over and check it out!
