First, a little about Juta Shoes- Juta Shoes is a social enterprise based in London, Tower Hamlets, where many local women are unemployed or underpaid. "Jute" means 'shoes' in Bengali, and each shoe's soles are made from jute, a high quality, tough material. Juta Shoes employ local women to manufacture the leather shoes using recycled leather, which would otherwise have gone to waste. This way, they support marginalised women who may otherwise have had a hard time finding employment, empowering them to work, support their families and earn profit from each shoe that sells.
The founders also host "Make Your Own Shoes" workshops where women are taught how to make Juta Shoes and learn valuable skills that can be useful for the future. All of their profits goes back into helping the women's trainings, workshops and supporting the community.
This being said, I received two pairs of Juta Shoes in my mail after browsing through their beautiful, minimalistic site. The order arrived really fast, within 3-4 days if you're in the UK. When I opened the parcel, I was absolutely delighted at the quality and look of the shoes. They come in many colors such as tan, brown, navy, red, silver and more, which means that there's something for everyone's taste.
I chose a pair of brown espadrilles for myself in a UK 5.5 which fits perfectly. The soles are very well made, and feels excellent when it's on my feet. In fact, since the shoes are made from real leather, the whole shoe feels very breathable when I wear it. It's one of the best quality leather shoes that I've owned, and it seems very sturdy and firm when it's on. It's not at all tight or too loose, and looks very vintage and chic.
I also ordered a pair of navy men's espadrilles because the espadrilles are all unisex, and goes up to a size UK 11.5. It's a beautiful matte leather, which means that it isn't as shiny as the brown shoes. However, it's a beautiful navy tone, which matches with chinos or clothing well. This would make the perfect pair of shoes for men during the spring or summer months.
Overall, these are definitely some of the best ethical and sustainable shoes I've seen. The quality is fantastic, and the workmanship is top notch. In fact, the shoes are very affordable at £70 per pair, and of course there's no guilt involved as all the profits goes back into helping local women achieve their dreams.
